So, the interest in subversive 80s clubland continues. Club to Catwalk, London Fashion in the 1980s opens this week at the V&A Museum. The private view party is this evening
|Me at 21 years old. Judy Blame made me those beads in 1981, his first ever piece. I still wear them today but have loaned them to the Museum for the duration of the exhibition. It was quite a wrench!|
and the poster girl for the exhibition is me!
Back in the 80s there was no endgame or moneymaking plan in our world. Friends worked together, doing things for no other reason than because we wanted to. This photograph was taken in 1984. John Derry-Bunce was starting out as a stylist and photographer Monica Curtin was looking to do some test shots. The shoot featured red clothing, some of it my own. Jalle Bakke did my make up and Ross Cannon was the only person I ever allowed or trusted to do my hair. Both are sadly no longer with us and much missed. The backdrop was painted by Simon Josebury. It was shot in the evening at the photographer's studio where Monica was working as an assistant during the day. In 1985 some images from this shoot made a fashion feature in Blitz Magazine. Now this particular one is the main image for the Club to Catwalk exhibition at the V&A.
It is rather nice to be appreciated 30 years on.
